What is sleep paralysis?

A Sleep Paralysis could be hereditary disorder which one person experiences shocking seconds or could be minutes of total body paralysis with so little respiration and eye movements. A person that is in this is experiencing it will feel awake, but cannot move or speak. Also, the common things that you would feel would include feeling choked or suffocated, you might also hear weird noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling like there's someone in the room with you. These symptoms often prove the person to believe in ghost or demons. When a person sleeps, the person's brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction. If the person that experiencing it comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to access muscle contraction, the person may not be able move his body, and basicly, become paralyzed.

When does it occur?

Sleep paralysis usually occurs while falling asleep, which is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis and If it happens while you are waking up, it's called hypnopompic or postdormital sleep paralysis. As it occurs while you are falling asleep or while waking up, you wont be able to move your body. In this case, the only thing you can do is look around or roll your eyes and you will sometimes see a shadows around you and the room that you are in will look exactly the same. While experiencing it, you'll also feel like something or somebody is on top of you and that's why you wont be able to move until its done.

What Happens With Hypnagogic Sleep Paralysis?

while you fall asleep, your body slowly relaxes. Usually you wont know whats happening, so you do not notice or see the change. However, if you remain or become aware while you fall asleep, you may not move or speak. During sleep, your body changes between REM or, rapid eye movement, and also NREM, non-rapid eye movement, sleep. One cycle of REM and NREM sleep could lasts atleast about 90 minutes. First thing that occurs first is NREM and it takes up to 75% of your overall sleep time. While you are in NREM your body relaxes and it stores itself. After NREM happens, your sleep switch to REM. Your eyes will move quickly and thats when dreams occur, but the rest of your body remains very calmed. Your muscles are going to remain calm or "turned off" means that you wont be able to move your body during REM sleep. If you become realized or wake up before the REM cycle has finished, you may notice that you cannot move or speak.
